Anyone else’s buddleia very slow growing?

My usually very reliable buddleia has only got a few tiny signs of growth so far. I’m sure it’s usually much further on by now. Anyone else had similar? Is it just this horrible spring cold or should I be worried it might be something more serious?

yes! Actually we have few very very healthy buddlieas in raised beds in the comunal areas of estate, we cut those back and they are growing very well with huge stems. However my own buddleia looks a little pale, the stems are growing OK but not nearly as well as their pals up the road.

Here in South West they are putting on lots of growth, I know they are pretty and good for wildlife but I have always looked on them as weeds and only grow them in the wild part of the garden.  Depending on where you live they could just be slow because of the cold winter.

Mine is slow this year too, it’s still early in the season for them yet.

Mine are a bit slow I think, I don’t mind though, gives food for bees and butterflies later in the season, I usually cut them back for a second time, but not so sure this year.

  • Thanks all, good to know I’m not the only one. We have continued to have cold weather and frosts even this week here in East Mids. I will be more patient! I know many look at them as weeds but I’ve always loved the flowers and seeing the all the butterflies they attract so am hopeful it will still revive itself!

Mine put out new leaves quite early on and I pruned them fairly hard back as normal about 6 weeks ago. Then we went into this prolonged colder-than-normal spell and they've hardly grown at all in the last month. As Lyn suggests, the flowers will probablybe a little later this year - but that's not a bad thing in this garden

That's a shame ... there are some lovely new cultivars nowadays, smaller shrubs, not as rampant, mainly sterile so not producing feral seedlings all over the place, and providing nectary for bees, butterflies and other pollinators, and lots of gorgeous fountains of colour.  We have Miss Ruby outisde our sitting room windows ... gorgeous

Here in the North East I have two Buddleia bushes and both have had the leaves burnt off twice by frost this year

I have a white buddleia that’s just got a nub of shoot. I might have pruned it too hard.

Got 2 purple ones - love how it attracts butterflies, would love a red one though.
