Spanish Flag - Ipomoea

Hi all, I am having real trouble starting off the Spanish flag plant. I took seeds from last years (shop bought) plant and sewed but they failed and I have also bought some packet seeds and they have failed. I have soaked them in water for 24hrs before planting and just tried dropping them straight from the packet in moist compost. I have tried a heated propagator and just in a greenhouse but still absolutely nothing? Are these normally so difficult to get going or am I missing something?

I don't have a lot of experience but I don't think the seeds last well - I had to buy new last year and the remains of that packet are certainly taking their time coming up... I'm unwilling to call it a failure yet!

Hi! I sewed some of these seeds about 2 weeks ago (pre soaked) for the first time and they popped up after 1 week, about 10 out of 40 seeds have germinated. Kept them on a windowsill, this is today.

First time I've grown them but they came up OK. 100% germination, must have been very lucky. I kept them on a South facing window sill and didn't presoak.

I'm wondering if yours got enough heat and light? I grew them next to the chillies that like 25 - 30 c to germinate. I hope you have some luck with them soon.
  • Wow, they look great. I am having one last go with the remainder of the packet and see how I get on. I hear you on the heat but I had hoped a heated propagator would do it but I guess not. Will try the window sill this time so fingers crossed.
Well done on your success though.

mine first batch looked like Samaliums back in march(8/10)...and i took them outside to cold frame, they where fine... and then to final positions... and it was to early...we had a week of 4C nights... all but one died (along with 8 ipomea "scarlet o'hara" despite all my efforts to protect them with mini cloches). Next batch germination was horrible only 2 out of 20. (while ipomea scarlet again germinated 8/10)

in both cases i have placed them in propagator trays above the radiator

What i think had happened was that central heating temperature was higher (up to 26C inside propagator) and more consistent(day/night) during cold weather at beginning of March. Once outside average temperatures went above 10C they started tuning heat down during night.

So i believe its constant heat that they need
