Do I need seed potatoes?

RullahRullah Posts: 54
Hi all I usually buy seed potatoes each year.

This year I put some not quite properly composted potato peelings into a raised bed and they are sprouting like crazy. If I left them, would they produce a good potatoes crop or would it end up as mostly foliage? Thanks

Not sure, about peelings, but I read in a garden mag you could plants the spuds you have forgotten about in the cool dark cupboard, last year we cut the up,so each chunk had a sprout and we did get little crop. Normally they would have gone in the compost bin. Try some let us know

If your peelings include an "eye", and left to grow as normal, you will usually get a few small pots.

I've used 'leftover' SM-bought spuds several times with very successful outcomes :)

Thank you all! I'm growing one lot of potatoes from an old manky one, but wasn't sure about just the peelings. They definitely have some eyes cos they've sprouted like crazy, I'm tempted to leave them and see how they go, but the problem is they're growing in an area that was meant to be for something else 🤣

I'll let you know how I get on
