Veg in a whisky barrel

AdRockAdRock Posts: 241
I’ve seen my local garden centre selling traditional whisky barrels, which have been charred on the inside for the process. I was wondering if anyone knew if this was safe to grow veg in? I assume because it’s safe for whisky it will be safe for veg but wasn’t sure!

They would be fine, just remember to drill decent sized drainage holes in the bottom.

What would you grow in them? I was looking at really big pots, similar, and hubby said how much compost they would need to fill!

I was thinking lettuce, radish, beetroot and some carrots this year and using it as an extra raised bed for crop rotation for next year

That's an awfully deep container for those crops, even the carrots won't be very deep.you could grow spuds

I was thinking spuds... maybe rhubarb would be good to try?

I assume they are half barrels as full size will take up a hell of a lot of compost.

Rhubarb isn't very deep rooted but gross pretty wide

Hi yes, sorry they are half barrels about 40cm deep

    Ah assumed full sized barrel
  • I grow all my veg in containers.
Tomatoes and cucumbers are my favourite thing to grow just choose outdoor varieties and give them some canes to grow up but they’d take up a lot of space!
In one smaller container I’ve grown radishes, carrots, spring onions and lettuce all in one season 🥰
