    I think the OP was imagining his children pushing past each other (as children do) in a tussle to get through the archway and getting caught and scratched on thorny roses. 

    Not usually a major problem, but I knew someone who had lost the sight in one eye due to just such an event. 😞

    Ouch! They can give you a really nasty scratch,, if nothing worse.

    You can get sweet pea varieties that work for hanging baskets / trailing, if you want more height.
