Leggy Runner Beans

CatDouchCatDouch Posts: 488
My runner beans have grown very quickly, I planted them from seed in pots about 10 days ago and they quickly germinated in a fairly warm room so I moved them to our coolest room but they wouldn’t stop growing 😂 They are now falling over so what should I do? I can move them into a little plastic greenhouse I have but should I repot  them into large pots so they are planted deeper or shall I take the plunge and plant them outside? I live in South Devon and the next 10 days nighttime forecast looks about 9 degrees. Thank you.

Put them out in the day and into your greenhouse at night for a few days, then if it stays mild where you are then go for it.

Thank you, I’ll do that, I’m always too eager/early as I’m an enthusiastic beginner. I think I did the same last year but it all turned out fine in the end 👍

Risky we had a frost this morning, forecast is pretty chilly at night. Put some in there see what happens. I have had to pot on my courgettes today because the pots I need for them contain dahlias which cannot go out. I have put one in the green house brought the other 2 back into the conservatory just in case. The sky is clear and forecast said cold tonight. They have got flowers on,as have the pumpkin and cucumbers, and were still in the seed cells and suffering

I’ve put them in my little plastic greenhouse and will leave them in there for a few days and nights and then will just have to take the plunge. I’ve made a note to plant the seeds a bit later next year. If they die I’ve got some more bean seeds so I’ll have to just plant them straight outside .... fingers crossed 🤞

Unsure where you live, most folk on here haven't even sowed their beans yet. I put broad beans in,in autumn, climbing French and pees have been hardening off a week night as well as day,a lot of stuff normally in the ( glass) green house is still in conservatory
  • The runner beans and courgettes have been outside in pots on a table here in South Devon for a couple of weeks. The cold has slowed the courgettes down, though not the runners, and I'll probably get round to putting them all in the ground this weekend...

Thanks, good to know @stephentame that I’m not the only one who has planted runner beans this early! I’m in South Devon too.
