To be fair, ( sitting on my comfy fence ) some females find it patronising to be called " girls" and some younger females find it patronising to be called " ladies " .
Maybe "guys" could become gender neutral in the same way that " astresses" all seem to be called Actors these days?

You may well have a point there @Hostafan1 altho I think it is age related - females above the age of .. say... late teens object to being referred to as Girls and prefer the term Women.  Not sure about Ladies - it can be seen as both a polite term ( tho maybe a bit old fashioned these days ? ) as well as a bit patronising.  OTOH, once you get to a certain age, a female could be grateful to be referred to as Girl ( as in Old girl ), Woman or Lady as opposed to " Oh, you mean that old Bag - yes, I know her " :D
I think a lot of people dislike the term Guy simply because it is seen as yet another dreaded Americanism creeping in.
Actually, we don't have as many terms for the male gender as we do for females.  You have Boy or Lad to = Girl or Lass.  Then you have Man  to = Woman but you don't have an appropriate male alternative to ladies.  That could of course be something to do with being the Superior Sex  :D:D

Just like that nice Mr Wilson,  I did love that man but what a fraud, he was nothing in real life like how he came across to his public.
Wislon’s man-of-the-people pipe smoking persona was a sham. Out of the public eye he smoked cigars.

What to call folk (can I use that?) is becoming more and more of a minefield. Seemingly everybody is offended by something but not by the same thing :o

Hanging head in shame :'(  Yes of course - I got a bit carried away there with my theory - can't even blame it on the sun altho perhaps rain has the same effect ?  All I can say in mitigation is that the term Gentlemen doesn't crop up  as often as Lady.  No excuse really !

Probably because few men are gentlemanly and more ladies are ladylike? @philippasmith2 ;)

I agree on that @pansyface but the growing number of people choosing to identify as a variety of genders/gender fluid/vegetables/chairs ;) is making it increasingly problematic.
