    Hi @debs64 👋

Could you post a pic of where you're thinking of putting the butt and an idea of how much space you have around it? A full sized water butt plus surrounding pots could be quite a big footprint. The slimline ones look quite smart.

Am I right in thinking you're in rented accommodation? All the butts I've had which were filled with rainwater, had diverters cut into the guttering down pipe. Would you be allowed to do that? Just a thought that you might have to make good (perhaps replace?) the down pipe if you leave the property or, at the very least, leave the water butt behind so water isn't gushing all over the patio when there's a downpour.

Heaven is ... sitting in the garden with a G&T and a cat while watching the sun go down

I went posh. But it is on our balcony. There are hanging plants in the top which will eventually spill over, potentially other plants in pots next to it too. We cut into a downpipe just round the corner and installed a diverter. Can be bought various places eg

Maybe you could get a low trough of some kind and build a bench or potting table over the top of it. You'd need to fit a pump or use it as a dip tank but you could hide a lot of water quite easily that way.
If you can keep your head, while those around you are losing theirs, you may not have grasped the seriousness of the situation.

Front "water butt in hedge" from my garden. A Hutt?

    It is something like this.
220 Litre Water Butt - Plastic Terracotta. I covered initially in weed membrane to disguise it. It's been happily working in the hedge (it seems) for the last eight years.

Hi all, thanks for your helpful suggestions. I have spoken to fiancé he thinks he could put in some guttering to move downpipe to a less obtrusive place so we are going to look at that option. We are in rented accommodation but are able to make changes we have improved the garden enormously. I don’t mind leaving the water butt when we move out. Hence the not wanting to spend £200.
Will hopefully go ahead. Thanks again to all of you for taking the trouble to give advice.

I have two cheap green ones, the one in view is tucked into a far corner of the garage and will be shortly disguised with brushwood on a roll. This is my posh one on the side of the house, but it will still have a trellis and climber planted on the left plus some sort of bin shed on the other side. Even posh designer ones are still plastic and aesthetically challenged, but this 300L one at least has the benefit of taking up very little floor space:

Butts fairly often seem to turn up on Freecycle etc. I got my backgarden one from a FB group for free.
