Using my mini plastic greenhouse

I'm in Gateshead and mine are currently home to some fairly robust seedlings. They are against a southeast facing wall and get a lot of sun, and so far everything in them has  survived the cold nights. Whether anything will survive outside of them is another matter.

I overwintered 5 geraniums (not the hardy ones) from last year in my blowaway, I cut them right back and they are looking really healthy with plenty of growth. I have also got calendula and nasturtiums also bidens self sown from last year growing in there. Mine also is in a very sheltered spot.. To be honest I wasn't expecting the geraniums to survive  but they did..

I've had my blowaway up all Winter and had all sorts in it. I planted seedlings way too early and had loads all over my windowsills, nearly every one is out in that or my cold frame now and they're fine. Planted Feb/March - Petunias, Dahlias, Agastache (some of those are in the ground, they were under a cloche at night but are now too tall!), Cosmos, Echinacea, Verbena B. I think that's everything?! I've had some Petunias outside in a bed too for about a week and they look ok too. Yours are smaller than mine were when they went out though.
  • Thanks @Crazybeelady! Sounds amazing. Where are you located? And approx how tall were your seedlings before you put them in?

I'm in Warwickshire. I suppose there was a mixture of heights depending on the plant. Cosmos were probably about 40cm high whereas Dahlias & Petunias were maybe 25cm? Verbena only about 10-15cm. I had enough that I was willing to risk a few! I didn't do them all at the same time, they all moved out gradually. I did at one point have to bring Cosmos back in but they've been back out for a few weeks now.
  • @Crazybeeladyamazong! I definitely have some time to go then!

I don't have a green house but I have two of the same model as yours and I have found them very useful. I tend to wait until the seedlings are a bit bigger before putting them out there (and yes, weighed down at the bottom or when it's full of seed trays I wedge the big wheelie bins in front of them on very windy days). I placed mine against the south facing wall of the house. Very useful for hardening off, just leaving the flap wide open for a limited amount of time - so much easier than carting the seedlings in and out every day. I have all my seedlings there now, and they've been fine despite some low night temps.

I'm waiting for the risk of frosts to pass before I bring out what I have in the zip-up out so I can get the next batch of windowsill seedlings (which are put outside during the day and brought in at night - wind permitting) into it.  I open the zip-up during the day but forgot about it this morning and didn't open it until after midday.  My it was hot in there! I don't want the seedlings getting weedy so I'm going to start just leaving the flap unzipped at night and fold it back during the day (earlier in the morning!). Fingers crossed.

  • I've got 2 larger versions of your blowaway and I've been germinating seeds in them for a few weeks now.  Dahlias, Asters, lots of veg, loads of wild flower seeds and all of my micro plugs and all seem to be coping well with the temperature in there.  In one of them I have a mini heater that just keeps the edge off and I've managed to germinate peppers alongside it.  I'm using the unheated one with the door open during the day to harden off prior to moving plants out.

We've had some really sharp frosts whilst I've been using them and all of the plants have been ok without additional fleece etc. I'm in Northants and it's been unseasonally cold but the plants still want to grow.

Hi @GreenHeart84 I, like you, am an amateur and started off growing veg/flowers last year. I’ve got exactly the same little plastic greenhouse and was always puzzled as to when I could put things in there.  This year I have grown cherry tomato plants from seed and started them off inside but everything grows so quickly indoors so about a week ago I moved the tomato plants and cosmos plants into the plastic greenhouse, to stop them growing too quickly and getting leggy and also as I was running out of room inside.  They have all been absolutely fine and look healthier than when they were inside. Temperatures look ok now so I’m going to start putting everything in there now, open in the day and zipped up at night. Hope that helps.
