As promised I've attached some images which might help. Essentially the slabs form a path down the side of the garage leading to patio area 1, which then leads to patio area 2. The final image is looking back at patio area 2. Please forgive the state of the wooden furniture but they too are on my clean up to do list
I love that lichen, mossy table. Other than that a pressure washer would clean up the slabs (and the furniture) and you could then see what you have and re-lay it in a more random fashion maybe with gaps where you can plant low level plants like thymes or saxifrage.
Remember that by the time you've put back all the pots and furniture the slabs aren't going to be the dominant feature and you really just need a stable base to walk on, arrange your furniture in a usable way and then the pots. As you already have some gravel it wouldn't look odd to have more of it between slabs or under pots and that would make the existing slabs go further of needed.
I like the stencilling but think it's definitely better suited to a modern courtyard style or a Moroccan/Persian themed garden.
Vendée - 20kms from Atlantic coast.

They are lovely and do compliment your garden. Anything new will look - well, new - and you will wish you had the moss back
Many thanks for the kind words. However the photos cover a multitude of sins in reality. I don't mind the lichen and the general weathering but the moss on the slabs is a step too far for me ! There is also a fair bit of repointing that needs doing, which will require weed and plant removal from the cracks. Whilst I generally try to avoid weedkiller preferring to hand weed sometimes it's the best thing for the job
I'd certainly clean your slabs before deciding. We had to go concrete because of cost but decided on large, smooth and pale , crucially we keep it clean, it is due a clean in this photo. It gives a modern look but I'm happy with it..
Cheaper to invest in a good karcher. It’s amazing how different they will look after a power wash. The moss is pretty easy to scrape off and the washer will take care of the general cleaning. I would honestly give that a go before spending a lot on changing it. Love the table also.
Marne la vallée, basically just outside Paris 🇫🇷, but definitely Scottish at heart.
You've all convinced me - I'll get the slabs washed and repointed first before deciding finally. If nothing else it buys time to hunt down the back of the sofa for more loose change 😊 Don't worry I won't be touching the table I like the weathered look on it too, just not the slabs.....
