This has popped up under the edge of a twisted hazel.

Plant ID app suggests a currant, but wondered if it might be a sycamore or something else.

    jap anemones or blackcurrant were my first thought

    Thanks, that was a super fast reply!

    No Japanese anemones in the garden I am aware of, but have redcurrants, so fingers crossed that's the most likely.

    I will leave it a bit longer then and just weed the garlic mustard from around it.

    crush a leaf, and see if has that currant smell to it

    I think you have two different plants in that picture, one looks like a currant and the other seems to be wood avons.

    EDIT and yes the tall one on the left is hedge mustard

    Yeah, the hedge mustard I know all too well. I've even been trying to eat it this year to get rid of it. Slowly winning.

    I'll crush a leaf when it isn't pouring with rain and see what it smells like.

    Yes, the other one might be wood avens.
