What should I put on a salad wall?

What would you put on a salad wall? I was thinking rocket, spinach, radicchio and maybe a few other things. Would love some advice!

Leaves you like to eat!  Oak leaf lettuce (cut and come again), pea shoots, soft herbs such as parsley, chervil, basil, chives and whatever else you like in salads.

The only edible things worth growing in your garden are those which you and/or your family like to eat. Added to that is food which can be expensive to buy but which you enjoy and are able to grow in your location.

I'm guessing that it is vertically planting in pots as opposed to rows in the ground ?

Could be wrong as I have never heard the term before either.

What about some strawberries? Also think about herbs you might like in your drinks, like mint, sweet basil or rosemary (look for compact prostrate or trailing varieties of rosemary).

There is a list of good performers here, but as previously mentioned by other posters there’s no point in growing something you or your family won’t eat.

About tomatoes, look for ‘tumbler’, ‘cascading’, ‘trailing’ or ‘patio’ varieties that are described as being good for hanging baskets.

Have you installed the wall already? Would be interesting to see planted up.

  • Thank you so much for all your suggestions! I haven't put up the wall yet, as I'm not sure what to go for.  I've seen hanging fabric vertical planters with pouches, but I was thinking of getting a stand alone thing—possibly more sturdy and durable. If anyone has a salad wall, I'd appreciate pics!

I was thinking of something along the lines of the ones I've seen online:

  • Also, if any of you have any more suggestions for cut and come again leaves and herbs, that would be awesome!

Find something with a good amount of soil around the roots, so it doesn't dry out too quick., otherwise you'll have bolted bitter salad wall.  Maybe some plastic window box pots on a book shelf suitable for outdoors?  Or maybe even DIY your own shelves out of lumber?
