I brought this California lilac last year. Recently the leaves have begun to turn yellow and drop. On closer inspection lots of the new growth seems to have been eaten and there are signs of webs of some sort. When I opened a clump of leaves covered in the web, there was some sort of worm inside. I’m a gardening beginner so any advice on how to address or treat this would be much appreciated? Is it possible to save this plant? Thank you

  • The little worms in leaves covered in web sound like caterpillars that could also explain some leaves being eaten. Not sure if this is related to the leaves turning yellow which might be another issue. I usually just leave caterpillars on shrubs to be food for the small birds in the garden as shrubs are usually vigorous enough not to be bothered too much by them. There are also types of wasp that will feed on them if you have a good amount of wildlife in your garden.
  • @robairdmacraignil that’s reassuring thank you. Now just to combat the yellowing leaves!
