Are my strawberry plants dead?

I cut back my strawberry plants (in large pots) last year but they haven’t grown back at all, there is not even a hint of a green shoot. They’re approx 3 years old.

I’m tempted to dig them out and replace them with fresh plants to ensure I have some home grown strawberries but am I giving up on them too soon?

  • My strawberry plants are massive this year...wonder if maybe they got too dry and perished? You can always dig one out and have a look, too late not to have any signs of life.

At 3 years old they are probably on their last year anyway but there is no need to cut these plants back.
Your best bet is always to allow a few runners to develop which you can grow on to produce fruiting plants for the next couple of years - ie work on a 3 year programme for the best results :)

Check the roots for vine weevils they love strawberry plants.
