Is my Arbutus unedo dead?

I have recently moved to a new house and I think this strawberry may have been planted a year or two ago by the previous owners.
All the leaves are dry and can easily be pulled off and the branches seems dry too. The tree has been like this every since we moved in three months ago.
I have been watering it every few days in the past month but have seen no change.
Its a relatively small tree too  so we're concerned that it may have been planted wrong and is already dead?

Any help appreciated thank you.

    It certainly doesnt look promising.
You could try scratching a bit of bark off the trunk or a branch close to the trunk to see if it's green underneath but if it's been than sadly the tree is dead

  • Thank you for your help. We just tried scratching it and the whole thing is dead. We dug it up and all the roots were rotten with lots of orange eggs.

Such a shame they are lovely trees, need full sun and end up pretty big.
If you are going to plant another tree prepare the area first with some bagged manure dug in well before you plant.
The tree you had prefers a sheltered spot and wasnt properly staked so it's possibly the roots never got established if it was rocked by windy weather over winter time.
As to the orange eggs they could be empty fertilizer granules, if they pop when you squeeze them.
If they squish they are eggs!
