Hi All,

I am just planted one Ligustrum Japonicum Variegated Tree in my garden for screening purposes. However, a week and a bit into the tree being planted the leaves is starting to turn red/purple. Please see photo attached. I have no idea what is going on as I am a beginner.

Tree is planted in a sunning position, I have watered it three times now with days I have not watered it at all. Also I have mulch protecting the soil around the tree but leaving the centre trunk exposed by few inches. My soils is well drained.

Can anyone help please?

Hi @kenton-lU0MxiO and welcome to the forum :)

I suspect that's frost damage ... not a lot you can do about it, a lot of shrubs and trees have been damaged this year and Ligustrum is susceptible to frost.

The warm spell we had in early March encouraged tender new growth and then we got hit by frosts.

It will drop badly damaged leaves and grow new shoots and leaves so just carry on as you are ... it sounds to me as if you're doing all the right things.  :)  A bucket full of water twice or three times a week (even if it rains) through the summer, more if we get a warm dry spell, is usually about the right amoujnt.

  • Very biblical and powerful. Dove meaning Holy Spirit, the Spirit of God descending on Jesus. Have you heard of the good news before?

Dovefromabove is from the comedy show Shooting Stars with Vic and Bob @kenton-lU0MxiO ;)

It's quite common for even the bog standard privets to get some frost damage and have purpley foliage in cold spells. All variegated plants tend to be less tough, so it's more common in those. It'll be fine though, so no need to worry  :)
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
  • I see, great thanks for your knowledge. Ha noted on the Doverfromabove.  :D
