Yes, we know the original Ironquois tribe, and many other Native Americans also, we are talking now. Carol Klein has a series of prorammes on at the moment, and she does it.I did it a couple of years ago, worked fine. As you have to plant sweet corn in blocks, it would have to be an even number to work. Tachana doesn't like beans anyway, and isnt growing them, she (?) wanted to know about sweetcorn, and was curious about 3 sisters, because she thought thats how you had to grow them.Hatti123, how tall is your corn, does it really need going indoors at night, as opposed to greenhouse? VERY annoyed here, numpty neighbour kindly informed us a couple of years back, he had mice under his decking, which ir RIGHT next to my fence, and one greenhouse, they ate, peas, beans, sunflowers, and recently my sweetcorn, I hate the idea of traps, we saw one of the little blighters yesterdya, boy do they move!
I got the impression Carol is trying the 3 sister thing for the first time and yes, the AmerIndian version would have used older, sturdier, later cropping varieties that are for storing for winter food, not eaten fresh and juicy.
Not being a nomadic Indian I'll stick with growing courgettes for eating fresh and squashes for storing and no beans or sweetcorn.
Vendée - 20kms from Atlantic coast.
"The price good men (and women) pay for indifference to public affairs is to be ruled by evil men (and women)."
I tried growing squashes under my sweetcorn, it was not a success and I'm not repeating it.
Sweetcorn should be grown in a block together to help fertilisation, but you only have 3 plants, a very small block. Just grow them in a triangle on their own and next time try to grow more, at least 9. They are not frost hardy and will need hardening off before planting outside. Do NOT plant courgettes with them, they will be swamped!
Dordogne and Norfolk. Clay in Dordogne, sandy in Norfolk.
@Nanny Beach hi yes maybe I'm being a bit cautious bringing them in at night, just don't want to take any chances especially as I haven't grown them before. Getting plenty of exercise moving them morning and evening along with the tomatoes 😂 luckily not too tall yet, about a foot, but had to pot on again yesterday. Next year I'll be starting them later, I'm just so impatient with seed sowing!
