Lawn Depressions

Our new house has a flat front lawn with areas with depressions. How do I solve that? Can I simply cut the turf in an X shape, peel back, backfill with soil or compost then return the turf to the now flat area? What filler to use? Soil from the borders or compost from the GC (what type of compost)?
Second question. I have a few edges where a now cut down tree caused the grass to due back. I was thinking of cutting a square or rectangle out around it and rotating it so the bare but it's inside good grass then seeding the bare bit that's more I'm the lawn not at the edge?
It is it better to just get a bit of turf instead?

Yes that's correct about the lawn edge rotate the good bit leaving the bare bit inside the lawn to fill in naturally or seed. Try not to cut to big of turf when rotating, small pieces are easier and faster , about a foot / 30cm give or take is about right.
