Yellow/dry grass patches have suddenly appeared

Hi

Over the last 2 weeks, yellow/dry grass patches have started to appear around the edge of my lawn in different places.

I have looked online and possible causes could be weedkiller that has found its way onto the lawn (though I was careful to try and avoid this), and I also put some lawn grower down a few weeks ago and I have read that sometimes the nitrates don't get fully absorbed, but I don't see why that would only affect the outside of the lawn.

My main worry, as well as it looking unsightely, is that this will spread to the rest of the lawn.

The lawn is relatively new - about 8 months' old - and it was looking good until the other week !

Any suggestions on what could cause it / how to treat it without digging it up, would be appreciated.

I've attached a couple of photos from yesterday.

Thanks

Did you use a spray weed killer cos it looks like stripe of spray to me.  All you can do is keep the grass watered in dry spells and make sure you don't cut it too short.  That way there will be enough vigour for the grass to grow back into those areas.

You can also do a lift and turn of a square of turf to help maintain a good edge.  Have a read of this especially the bit on repairing lawn edges -

I used a watering can that had some liquid weedkiller mixed with water, so I guess it might mimmick the way I was using the can.

    Thanks for the link.

Is there a possibility of it spreading?

Weedkiller only kills the grass plants that it's been in contact with, so it shouldn't spread. If it's just little bits around the edges, the quickest fix would be to get a plank and a spade (or edging iron if you have one) and cut a new edge on the lawn making the border slightly wider.
If you have to use weedkiller near plants that you want to keep, it's easier to accurately target just the individual weeds with the gel formulations, but in a border it's as quick to hoik them out with a daisy grubber tool (which is probably cheaper than a bottle of weedkiller). I find a small onion hoe is the quickest way for lots of tiny weed seedlings around plants.

Probably not or it would have shown up by now.
Much better to ditch the weedkiller and hand weed.

You also might be considering making a border along the fence so you will be cutting the grass back, in fact you could do that now to tidy the edges. It's amazing how neat a lawn can look with straight edges even though it might need mowing,

Grass has great ability to recover so although we love a green lawn it's not necessary to waste the precious resource of water on it, save that for your plants which will not recover. Keep the mower blade high and cut little and often will help strengthen the grass to deal with dry spells.
