Bought liners for metal raised beds

I've just had some raised beds delivered and bought the liners to go with it. They are on the patio and have a matching metal base with three or four drainage holes in it.

I'm just suddenly a bit stumped as to what to do about the liners. I mean, I must have to make holes in them, mustn't I, so they don't get waterlogged. Just a bit worried about cutting into the new liners I've paid for without being sure what I'm doing. Only grown in pots before so it's all a bit new.

Thanks so much 😊

  • Is the liner made of permeable material that will let water through? I'm surprised a custom liner needs to have holes put it in rather than being supplied ready to fit. Have you looked online to see if there is a video tutorial as to how to assemble your item and fit the liner? This could be on the supplier's site or Youtube. As the system has legs, I assume it's raised rather than ground level.

    Hi, thanks for the reply.
It doesn't have legs. It's a modular system so basically two planks high but made of metal and sitting on a metal base (which does have a few holes in)
I didn't see a video but I might ring them and ask if it's permeable. I didn't think about that. Thanks.

I've just found has a look and it does say it is made from porous material, and also says this
    • Liners help to regulate drainage and retain water
So I'm assuming I don't have to make holes in it and can just start filling the trough up with soil now.

I think I would put the liner in and pour in a bucket of water to see how fast it drains through, before filling with soil, just so that you know what you're dealing with in terms of drainage.
Doncaster, South Yorkshire. Soil type: sandy, well-drained

Oh that's a good idea, JennyJ, thanks :)
