Training Jasmine up brick wall, trellis or wire?

Hi,

I'm looking to start training a Jasmine up the front of the house. Not sure what's the best way to do it though.

Considering either a wooden trellis or tensioned wires. Any recommendations?

Tensioned wires for me using proper vine eyes so the wires are held away from the wall for ventilation.   Cheap, unobtrusive and, if well installed, needs no maintenance other than occasional retightening and easy to extend across the house when the jasmin gets big enough.

Trellis is much more flimsy, will rot over the years and be difficult to extend and have looking the same.

Great, that's what I was leaning towards. In terms of direction, do you think it should be horizontal or vertical (or both?)

I agree with Obelixx. I’ve had both trellis and tensioned wires for jasmine and I’d go with wires every time.

As regards positioning, aesthetically I prefer the vertical wires however jasmine might need some assistance to climb that in the form of perhaps twine or wire tied horizontally as it grows.
Edited to add, I’ve just noticed your ‘...or both?’ That would be the perfect solution I’d say!

I planted my first star jasmine last September, against a rust builders' mesh for reinforcing concrete that I've erected round a chicken run so I can't yet tell you whether it wants to grow vertically or horizontally.  It's slow to get going after a long wet winter and a cold dry spring.

However, I do know that horizontally trained plant stems produce more flowers than those that go straight up so I would suggest horizontal wires at 30cm intervals and then some careful tying in or twining.
