Please help identify

Hello, can you please help identify this hedge outside our new house. 

The hedge has been in this location for decades but its riddled with ivy. We’ve started to remove some of that and want to get the hedge looking fuller again but we’re not even sure what it is. Please help.

    I'm not sure what it is either but it may thicken up the lower part if you cut it down by half (making sure there's no birds nesting first of course). After you've pruned it, give it a good feed and water it well and hopefully it may regenerate.
