Training sophora sun king

I have a sophora sun king (see pic) which is happy and healthy and just growing vertically upwards from one main stem. Does anyone know if I  trim top off it will encourage it to create sideways branches and if so when to do it. Flowers just coming to an end

I don't know if this is of any help, from Burncoose Nursery website (scroll down for pruning information)

I don't grow it myself, but l'm sure there's a forum member who does and can give you more advice  :)

Thanks for responding  - lots of the advice (like this one) is that you can be pretty tough to train it against a wall and snip off branches heading in wrong direction but my issue is I’d like branches going in any direction other than up 😀
