  If it's an old mower you might look into sharpening the blade or replacing with a new one while in there.

  It should cut cleanly (like a sharp knife or scissors) and not rip or tear the grass blades.

  If it's sharp the cut edge of the grass will be straight.  If not, it will be torn and may also be pulled loose at the roots.  It's worth taking the blade to be sharpened if you can't do it yourself but it's possible with a good knife steel.
