Shallots grown in modules, do I separate?

I bought some shallots Roderique online form Marshalls and they have been grown in 'multi sown plant modules'. There are basically loads of seedlings per module. Do I separate them before planting out (I'm thinking this is probably the right choice) or sow them all together? I actually thought I'd bought sets so was a bit confused when they arrived like this! I've not grown shallots before so any advice would be very welcome, thank you....

They need to grow individually at some point, but whether you separate them now or in a few weeks depends on whether you think you can do it without damaging them.  I would try with one module now, and if most of the separated seedlings survive a week, then do the rest.  The alternative is to remove the weakest seedlings from each module, leaving just one (this may be what is intended.)  It depends on how many plants you want to get out of them.

  • Thank you BobTheGardener, thats very helpful. I think I will try and separate one module and see if they survive, there are so many seedlings I will have tons left from the other modules if they don't. Thank you!
  • You can multi sow (or plant) 3 or 4 in a clump if you wish.
  • Thank you Chris, I might try that too, got so many seedlings I can see what works best for next year, thanks.

Let us know how you get on @Cleomeclare :)
I usually grow shallots from sets, so interested in how they do.
