japanese spotted laurel

can you tell me what this is on my laurel, doesnt seem to be bugs but its turning the leaves yellow and they then drop off, sprayed it  to what seems no effect , leaves a sticky residue .

    Hi allan and welcome to the forum.
    Sadly the photo is out of focus so it is difficult to see what ails your spotted laurel. If it leaves a sticky residue, the obvious culprit is some sort of aphid or other sap sucker. Have you tried squishing one?

  • Out of focus or not - the trouble is definitely a bug of some sort - mealy or woolly type aphids - how long have they been on it? It's only April  
    They are very resilient to spray as it never reaches their bodies - use a paintbrush and washing up liquid to remove them than rinse the whole plant.
