Some of these leylandii have a short life, 30 years or so, we had similar, they started breaking after that time we had to have them taken out. I think yours have come to the end of their lives. They look quite horrible as they are, I think it’s time to do some serious thinking about that hedge.
Gardening on the wild, windy west side of Dartmoor.

Yes between the dead wood and my short term bodges to keep the dog from getting out it looks a real mess.
Removing the lot and replacing will cost a fortune I’d have thought, there’s 50 of them, not to mention the time it would take for any privacy to return.
A fence at the permitted 6.5 foot would see me overlooked by the houses opposite.
You would soon get used to the perceived overlooking and you could always plant a large bush or small tree to block the view of particular windows - you don't necessarily need a very tall hedge to do that.
As Lizzie says but a photo of your garden might help with suggestions. It's different being overlooked by bedroom windows as they aren't occupied much during the day but being seen from downstairs is intrusive I think being surrounded by 12ft conifers could be very depressing though
