Use for twigs?

Lots of trees in the garden, mainly beech and birch, so we always have lots of fallen twigs and even branches to dispose of. I’ve left piles in the woodland areas for use by wildlife, but still lots left. Is there any reason why I shouldn’t put them through the shredder, and use the chippings as mulch? Would this be a bad idea?

Shredded branches make great mulch.  I usually just shred mine straight onto the compost heap though.
A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.

That’s very good to know. My green waste bins would be always full if I had to dispose of them outside the garden. I’ve not been very successful with compost heaps, I’m afraid.

If you have any problems with cats leaving 'deposits' in the borders you could use twigs to make the borders less appealing.  If not, shredding is a good idea.

Cat poo not a problem, rabbits, squirrels, badgers, foxes and deer instead! Nothing resembling a border for anything to wreck. Lots of areas with shrubs where I could lose the chipped twigs. I do have a spiky Berberis bush that I prune specifically for twigs to protect some of the plants that get nibbled.
