Plant ID please?

This beetroot coloured, giant carrot like thing is regrowing.  I've dug out a few of the tap roots, and the regrowth is at the top- any ideas what it is?

A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.

Could be @Hostafan1 , nearly added that myself.  Need to wait until the leaves unfurl.

  • Thanks for the thoughts.  The garden was previously overgrown for 15+yrs and cleared last year.  I vaguely recall large, beetroot coloured leaves , but nothing like the peony or black bryony pics I've seen.  I guess I need to be more patient and let it grow before working out if its a weed.
