Replacing a hedge plant isn't a problem if the hedge is fairly new but if it is well established, you might have a struggle to get the dead one out, and it will need to be removed. Also it can be difficult to get a replacement plant to thrive if it is overshadowed by mature plants. When I have to replace one of the hedge plants, I cut back the ones on either side so that the new plant has enough light in order that it may grow and flourish.
