Old Roses Bushes

I have just acquired a new garden with  3 rose bushes. They are about 3ft tall, the leaves are a deep red colour and all the stems are black.  Some of the stems are dead and break off really easily.  There is no new growth from the ground, can I prune it now? Any advise please

    No sorry, I don't know the names there are no labels on the roses, they look so old and gnarled, and I will take a picture, however I am not back to the garden until the weekend

    Sorry I cannot get the photo to attach,  my technology is rubbish, I have the photo but cant do anything with it!!

    Use the postcard icon above the reply box to load a photo but make sure it's less than 2mb in size or it will fail to load.

    To resize a photo, click to open it then right click to get options including change size.  Save the smaller version then load as above.
