Lettuce.

I am having trouble with germinating Rocket. Surely, this plant should be as easy as any other lettuce type plant. Mentioning this to a friend, she also has over the years had little success. Whatever could be the problem, I wonder.

I am absolutely not an expert but what kind of conditions are you trying to sprout it in? I've always managed it well with a small pot on our kitchen window.

Takhana, I filled several small pots with peat based compost, and carefully sprinkled a small amount of seed on surface. then a light dressing of compost to cover. I made sure the compost was well watered initially. Placed pots in kitchen too.........

How long since you sowed, must admit I don't cover them with compost
  • I sowed some rocket seed outside (in a container) about 2 weeks ago and it germinated fairly quickly. It's a a semi-shaded part of the garden and I used a MPC, lightly dusting the seeds to cover. I've kept the soil moist (watering before sowing and every day with a light showering). I must say although it has germinated the growth isn't exactly quick so far, but then it has been cold!

Not sure this actually helps - maybe you need to try and keep the soil more moist? If you only watered before sowing and not since that might be why.
