How deep to bury tumbler and cordon tomato stems

My F1 Tumbler x 3 and Moneymaker x 4 tomatoes have been romping away and are now in need of potting up. Before I do this tomorrow, I just wanted to check how deep they can/should be buried? Generally the advice I have read is to bury up their first true leaves (they're currently buried up to their seed leaves), but can they or should they go deeper (eg up to their second or even third true leaves)? They're growing rather tall for plants that are only around 5-6 weeks old! Also is it normal for tumbler varieties to grow so tall?

They love where you have them,I would only plant as deep as the bottom leaves

They would have to be going into very big pots to get that deep. If their next pots are twice the height of the present ones you will be doing well. You will still be putting them in the new pots and then just surrounding them with compost to get them that deep, which is ok.
  • They are currently in 9cm pots and I was going to pot up into 2 ltr pots where they will hopefully stay until I plant out. Can I basically then just plant as deep as they'll go into that size pot? Best to remove leaves first?

You can plant them as deep as you like/can if mine get really leggy I plant them sideways in the ground with only the top group of leaves above the ground.
Yes to removing any leaves that you bury.
  • Thanks @Skandi, that's really good to know!
