Removed fence behind leylandii

Hi, we planted leylandii in front of a 5ft fence.  The hedge is well established now but is brown at fence side.  If we remove the fence will the hedge regenerate on the brown side?
Thanks for any advice.

Afraid not. Leylandii will not grow new shoots from brown wood. Keep the fence there 👍

As Dove said, Chameacyparis Leylandii do not regenerate from old wood.
However, there may be some new green foliage from this side which may just start to push through to the other side.  It's a fast growing species, so it's possible it may cover the dead brown stuff in time.

I'll continue to advise people that Thuja Plicata are a much better choice, if only a little slower (18 inch per year, easily).  Regenerate from older wood, so even bald patches come back.  Can take pruning twice a year (late spring, through summer until late summer or very early autumn).  Smells of apple when the leaves are cut/crushed.  Not so many spores as Leylandii.
