Rose pruning

This rose was planted about 4 years ago and it was only last year we had our first blooms. It looks very healthy now but wonder if the one much longer stem (which is about 20” longer than the others ) should be cut back or just left ? Thanks . Apologies that the photograph is not in portrait mode.

  • Does it get enough sunshine? To wait that long for a rose to flower is too long. If they are planted in a sunny area and get fed they should produce blooms in the first year. And yes cut down that cane, can't let it grow like that. Do you know what variety it is? As they have different growth habits and as such different pruning requirements.

I don’t know the variety as it was a present given to us as a memorial plant to remember my late father-in-law. I did give it a good mulch early on in the year and will certainly take your advice and prune that stem. It’ll be interesting to see how it flowers and perhaps I should send you a photo when it does ? Thanks for your help .😎
