  Thanks @pansyface. The dead fruits on the branches from last year resemble plums or figs.

  It’s definitely not a fig 😃 
  
  Sometimes if the plum
  has contracted Brown Rot the fruit goes brown and wizened and remains on the tree.

  Thanks @Dovefromabove. That may be what has happened - last year's fruits are brown and wizened.

  The first thing I would do is clear a 1m diameter circle around the base of the tree. This can help prevent the pathogens that cause brown rot from lurking.
