I need help identifying this fruit tree. Any assistance would be gratefully received.

    A plum of some kind.

Thanks @pansyface. The dead fruits on the branches from last year resemble plums or figs.

    It’s definitely not a fig 😃

    Sometimes if the plum
has contracted Brown Rot the fruit goes brown and wizened and remains on the tree.

Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.

  • Thanks @Dovefromabove. That may be what has happened - last year's fruits are brown and wizened.

Lots of info and advice here

The first thing I would do is clear a 1m diameter circle around the base of the tree. This can help prevent the pathogens that cause brown rot from lurking.
