Peony tree taking its time to flower

Hi all, I am looking for some peony experts out there. I bought this peony rose tree two years ago and I've been waiting for it to flower ever since... I know they can be slow to establish, but I worry that I'm not giving it the best chance in its new home. Do you think the container I've planted it in is big enough? I read that peonies don't like to be too deep in the soil, does mine look ok? I fed it fish blood and bone a few weeks ago, is there anything that you've found peonies thrive on?

One of our tree peony was very very slow to get established and this was in the ground.
Now both are great and happy to be pruned back as they can get out of hand.
We gave a seedling to friends who did put it in a pot and within 4 years it was flowering and looking fabulous.
We and them haven't feed them in all the years we have had them!!!
  • Thank you, it sounds like there's hope for this wee two year old yet!

Took mine 7 years to flower. It was in a pot for the first 3 years then planted out in the garden

I hear tree peonies are a little finicky. I planted two last autumn, one in the ground and the other in a pot. I trolled the net for tips ahead of planting and various sites and posts said that they should be planted slightly proud of soil level, which is the main reason for them not flowering, so I wonder that yours may be planted a bit too deep. The other tip I got was that if potted, it should be in a large pot, at least 50 cms / 18-20 inches, and for no longer than 5 years. I hope this helps.
  • Thank you, I'll take some of the soil off the top of the planter and see if it helps. I think the planter is about 50cm in diameter, so it should be ok.
