I’m waiting until 1st of May to prune my hydrangeas.  I leave last year’s flower heads on over winter & spring to protect the new growth.  They soon catch up in May and June.

Great minds think alike, ERICS MUM. I also wait until the month of May to prune dead wood although this year, I made an exception. Aside from a terrible month of February (record cold), the hydrangeas had a Zoom meeting without my consent :o and decided to break dormancy early o:) . They started leafing out in March :( . This morning we had a late frost but, apparently they are ok... although I prepared them: mulched, watered last night deeply and covered those hydrangeas that had tiny broccoli heads (open flower buds). I used to also deadhead spent flowers in May but, there are so many flowers now that I discontinued doing that. Mother Nature has been doing that for me for about 5 years now. Hee, hee, hee. :)

Dead heading is a chore if you have many plants, I’ve got about 60, would take me almost a week but I’ve got help now.
