Japanese maple (acer) tree problem

I have a Japanese maple/acer tree that has over the last few weeks started to look like the picture. Not sure what is exactly wrong with it and whether it is recoverable? Have given it along with other plants regular watering so don't think it is lack of water..We have a similar green acer tree located in the same area that seems to be thriving.. Any advice would be appreciated.

  • I'm afraid the pot it is in is much too small for it. Your acer is likely to have been suffering from stress for some time, and it may have failed on that account, by succumbing to a fungal disorder that blocks the stem from transporting water. This tends to show up at this time of year as leaves beginning to open then wilting.

It's possible also that it's more susceptible to frost than your other one. A telltale sign is if, when you peel back a bit of the bark, there are dark lines underneath. If it is a fungal death, you would be well advised to dispose of it by burning not composting, as the disease can spread. If it's frostbite you may get lucky and a couple of new leaves may appear, but it will certainly need a container at least twice as wide and high as the one it's in, and soil-based compost.

Yes, bigger pot and a bigger pot for that thing next to it too.
