Growing veg in shade

I have a corner in the far end of the garden which doesn't get much sun at all - it gets little in the morning in the Summer for about 1 hour. There is a gate at the right side which when open will give part of sun for about 2 hours in the afternoon. I have looked up and it does say you can grow in shade - is it worth the effort or should I just put shade loving plants there instead? Welcome advice as I really enjoyed growing veg in pots last year but have no more space. It is north face - this was taken at 930 and sun out but shade as at side of wall and then house is to the right. Thank you Thank you in advance, Louise

Most leaf salads like shade, and oriental greens do as well, on the whole

  • In addition to the salad crop @raisingirl mentioned you could try root crops like onions, potatoes, beetroot, parsnip etc. They are frequently suggested for forest garden type environments.

An alternative is something perennial like alpine strawberry or mint.

I would say it has more to do with light levels than sunshine, as @raisingirl says leafy greens would be fine and I would include things like chard.  Mint would love it and parsley, sweet cicely and chives would probably be OK.  Peas might manage and carrots which need warmth rather than sunlight so I would suggest you experiment and see what you can grow.

    Good luck  :)

Yes some vegetables and salads will grow in shade, but what are you planning to grow them in Louise, pots on the terrace? Not in that rooty, dry soil at the base of the tree, I hope?!

Wireworm (Click beetle larvae) I think, unfortunately:

A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.
