Advice on pear/apple tree roots

in Fruit & veg
Hi all,
I recently impulse bought several fan-trained fruit trees from B&Q (probably not the best idea at the best of times). I'd left it too late to buy from a specialist and saw some trees that looked ok. However, on getting them home, when I removed them from their pots there was almost no root system at all. I've never seen anything quite like it. I have put them in for now but I'm wondering whether there is much if any chance of these establishing (especially given the lateness of planting). I'm also very curious as to how a tree like this can have no roots...?? Any ideas? Should I just return them now and not waste my time?
Thanks for any advice
Dave

I can't help really but are there some big roots just at the bottom if the trunk that look like they have been cut?
The smaller finer roots are the ones that count as they are feeder roots, larger ones are for stability.
I thought at first maybe they were grown in airports but doesn't look like it.
And is that the price?
I'm not sure what you mean about airports - could you explain a bit more?
Many thanks
Dave
Basically pots with lots of holes.
Easier to look here https://air-pot.com/
Your plant to root ratio seems all wrong, for a stem that thick I would expect a lot more roots.
I would certainly return. For £35 a tree I would expect a much better tree.
They don't like you doing it but I always take the pot off and look at the root system unless I can see them growing out the base or it's obviously just been potted which is the case with roses as they pot up the bare roof ones to sell over the summer and a large pile of potting compost on your shoes is a bit of a give away,
