Lawn issues

Firstly thanks for looking at my post.

I have just moved into a house and the lawn is let’s say not in good nick.

Ideally at this stage I do not want to start again due to funds being spent doing up the rest of the house.

I am looking for any ideas.... not scared of manual labour etc

i have mowed the lawn and done green keeps growing back, but what’s with the straw?(as you can tell I’m new to gardening lol)

I assume it's just dead grass, some types grow tall.
You need to rake it out or use a mechanical scarifier.
Then most likely you will need to over seed.
Lots of threads on here and on the web about rejuvenating lawns.

It’s not a large lawn ... get a spring time lawn rake
something like this https://www.theenglishgarden.co.uk/review/garden-rake-review/ ... garden centres B&Q, Homebase will have them ... take off the dead grass firmly so that it ruffles up the grass too but not so hard that it drags the roots out.
That’ll get the air to the base of the grass and it’ll be healthier and grow back thicker.

Mow at least once a week with the mower set at a mid-way height. (Mowing too short will scalp the grass and the sun will scorch the roots).

I would get some soluble seaweed fertiliser and dilute it in a watering can as directed on the pack
and water the lawn all over.
It will give the grass a boost won’t burn the lawn as is possible with some of the granular feed and weed mixes.

Also you could get one of these https://www.homebase.co.uk/spear-jackson-traditional-stainless-daisy-grubber/12834573.html
and use it to get at the roots of those larger weeds in the second and third pics
