Why is my asparagus dying 😭

Above is a picture of my asparagus, this is not the first spear to collapsed!  They start out nice and straight but collapse overnight before they are ready to be cut! This is only my second year of growing so relatively new to this crop, any suggestions?

    That looks like slug damage at the base, so you might need some anti slug protection.

    It does look quite pale though and shouldn't be that colour - is it getting enough light?

    I would guess slugs too and maybe some frost?   We've had quite a lot of frosty morning lately and it's done for some of our spears.
