Another thing we do is to sink a largish upside down plastic bottle (base cut off) in the middle of the circle so it’s pointing down into ‘the pit’. Then when they’re big plants, to water them, a couple of times a week we put the end of the hose into the bottle and turn the tap on for a while.
That way the pit is like a sump filled with water (as well as the composting stuff) and the bean roots go down deep to seek out the water rather than stay near the surface which can happen if you simply water the ground around the beans.
They need a lot of water. 😊
