Thanks Silver Surfer. Yes, the leaves are large like the palm of my hand when it is in full bloom. And the stems are really long! I will send another pic into the forum when it's in fuller bloom. The leaves are definitely not small. My plant is only just starting to regrow again since the winter, hence the small leaves. I just thought i'd ask the forum whilst it was on my mind. But perhaps its better to get everyone's  opinion when the plant is in full bloom. Thanks again!

    Tetrapanax
has a palmate leaf...it has one large stalk with the veins all radiating from the one point..rather like the spokes of a bicycle wheel....see my first pic.
One stalk one leaf on the top.

Sorry but your leaves  may grow and be large,  but they are much more cut and divided than Tetrapanax.

100% positive your shrub is a Peony...
I am not sure what more I can tell you to convince you.
     Maybe time is the answer.
May I suggest you look VERY closely at your leaf.

Thanks so much everyone for your replies! I hope you are all right. This is the 3rd year it has come back. So hopefully this is the year it will produce beautiful flowers! It grew very tall last year about 5ft. So hopefully this year it will give me some flowers too! 😊

Try feeding it now with some slow release fertiliser for roses or tomatoes as these include nutrients that promote flowering.  Give it occasional liquid feeds of tomorite or similar between now and mid July but not later.

Do not prune it this year.  Mine is currently looking like this:

It may be a yellow type, like Paeonia ludlowii.  Here an image of the leaves:

I have seeds for that one after inheriting the pink one when we moved here.

The last garden was far too cold for tree peonies but now I can experiment.

Hi, I have a yellow tree peony that took seven years to flower! Mind you I did buy it when it was only about a couple of inches tall. Worth the wait. It looks exactly like yours. Sorry about the rubbish photo
