Rambling Rector

I have a problem with a Rambling Rector in my garden (the rose as opposed to an eccentric wandering clergyman :) ).

It's been happily growing over some trellis panels for about 12 years now.  I pruned back by about 2/3 in the autumn as it was getting a bit out of hand.  As you know this last winter has been very wet and, at times, very cold but I was surprised to find that there's not a single leaf bud appeared yet.

All my other roses, climbers and shrub, have good growth at this stage.  I've waited in hope but do you think at this stage of the year it's definitely dead? Does anyone else have ramblers that haven't got going yet?

Have you tried scraping s bit of stem, see if it's green? I love my rector I know a lot of folk on here hate them, because of the growth
  • Thanks Nanny,

I never thought of that.  That's a very good tip.

I love mine too.  It's a massive rose but it has plenty of room in the spot where it grows over an arch in my garden. It's worth it for the avalanche of white blooms every year but definitely a plant for a large garden!!

    They're really hard to kill😊

  • I know!!

We have had some really bad conditions over the last two years though. We’re on clay here and the soil is pretty good but this is the second year where everything has been saturated for at least three weeks. That’s despite being near the top of a hill where you would expect water to drain away. Water lay in the borders for days, then there were the strong North East winds and snow for several days.

I do wonder whether the roots being sodden for so long might have beaten it this time

You may well be right. Part of my war of attrition involved denying water.

I’d give it more time. A lot of plants are hiding this year because of the very cold late conditions.
  • Very true. I don't need to do anything about it yet so watch and wait is a good option.
