Bamboo advice

Hi
we are looking for screening to go along our neighbours fence , we were thinking of bamboo, please need advice on which bamboo to plant.
Any advice will be great, should it be planed in the ground or in a pot?

Thanks Paula

  • Not an expert but I know some types of bamboo send out runners and become a problem, for you and neighbours. Maybe put them in large tubs or go for clumping type

Whilst we love our bamboos you cannot think about putting them in an area that will spread to your neighbour. This could end with a lot of issues.
Why are you thinking only about bamboo?
There are many other plants that aren't invasive that you could use to hide and make your side of the fence very attractive.
  • Hi thanks for your advice. Let me explain a bit further our neighbour has taken all of his trees down in his garden and has expose our garden to all the houses around us so we are trying to put some planting up against the fence that will be about 6 foot that will give us a little bit of coverage as we are very open now and has ruined my garden and privacy , I understand bamboo is fast growing I was thinking of putting it in planters and buying it already quite grown .

A bit more information and a photo of the area would help.
How much sun, how long is the fence area would help with advice.
Large planters would be best but they are very expensive.unless you can build your own.

This would also be one of those rare occasions when leylandi would work!

  • Thank you, I will take a photo tomorrow, it’s not our fence and would really appreciate any help about 15 ft long
  • What about willow? Grows fast and I don't think it spreads like bamboo.

Have you seen the price of mature bamboo?  Enough to provide immediate privacy over a 15 foot run will be extremely expensive.  One possible alternative would be to erect trellis panels immediately within your own garden alongside the existing fence, and grow plants up that.
Fast growing bamboo also tend to be the type which throw out runners so you would need to contain them in some way.
