update on this is what we did today Notbthe prettiest but I had spare paving slabs thought I’d use those around the beds may cut the cardboard back now
You do need to give the cardboard a good soaking before you pile on the compost and start planting. Eventually it will stay damp thru absorbing moisture form below but for now it needs help.
We're doing something similar except I got OH to scalp the grass with his strimmer before laying cardboard and this morning I will soak it ready for him to pile on some lovely 2yr old manure. Once the weather warms up a bit it will become my new dahlia bed.

@Obelixx aha I have plans for possibly one to do that but I have so much to plant out I am not decided yet - I also have one huge garden bed to plant up which I added some manure to -I just need to buy some for these beds too .thanks for the tip regarding soaking as I thought so but couldn’t remember - it’s a bit messy around the edges as we didn’t have enough of the same sized slabs but I wanted to use up what I had
