Can anyone help ID these roots?

Hi,
we are newbies to gardening and really hoping someone will be able to shed light on these.  We enthusiastically started digging the beds of our new house (the garden is near a wood and was quite overgrown when we started) but then we found these roots in the beds, and under the lawn. At first we worried these were knotweed roots, but some specialist sites have said not but they'd do a survey if we wanted.  If anyone can help us ID these roots it would be great. There's no growth visible anywhere above ground.  Thanks.

Is there a tree nearby, maybe on the other side of the wall? Maybe something in the cherry family? They tend to have a lot of root near the surface.

  • Thank you. That's a possibility. Before the neighbour moved in there had been lots of things growing in the garden and there are visible stumps between the two fences. The garden was overrun with ivy and on the council land to the side are many many trees.

If it was Japanese knotweed I think it would be shooting by now. I think the best course of action is to just keep digging them out until you have enough clear area for planting. Watch out for suckers appearing if they are from a living tree, and pull out any that appear.
