Upside down Newt

I've just seen a Newt upside down in my pond.  I thought maybe it was dead until it moved away from its spot, so any ideas as to why it was upside down?

    They do that when they are about to lay eggs.
    Gardening on the wild, windy west side of Dartmoor.
